WHALE SHARKS, ALCYONIUMS AND CORALS IN TRITON BAY
Most of the dives in Triton Bay include rocky formations and boulders. The upper part, sometime until the surface, is generally covered with huge wonderful soft corals formations of all shapes and colors. Underneath are hard corals of the genus tubastrea, mostly tubastrea micranthus but some rocks or walls are entirely covered with the flourishing orange tubastrea coccinea. Black corals are also common, sometime forming large forests. Below 15-20 meters, the bottom is generally sandy, and offers many critters subjects such as rare nudibranchs, frogfish, fire urchins with zebra crabs and Coleman shrimps, etc. Fishes are abundant, schools of sweetlips and snappers, many angel fish, large school of surgeon fish, predators as Mobula rays, barracudas, Spanish mackerels, dogtooth tunas and the ubiquitous wobegon shark.
The platforms fishing at night for baitfish are visited by Whale sharks. In the evening we check for the ones having whale sharks underneath and dive them on the following morning. We organize small groups of 8 divers and rotate every 30 minutes to make sure everybody sees them. Often some dolphins are playing around too. Both diving and snorkeling are possible.
Landscapes in Triton Bay are magnificent, with mountains covered with rainforest up to the shoreline. Little creeks with sandy lagoons surrounded by lush vegetation are everywhere.
