A Precious Encounter in Triton Bay | Wallacea Dive Cruise

With so much of the ocean still unexplored, we feel incredibly lucky to share the water with some of the most precious creatures on earth. It is no secret that the true heart of any dive trip is the amazing marine life we get to meet.

As our cruise arrived in the waters of the beautiful Triton Bay near Kaimana, we were buzzing with excitement to see what was waiting for us beneath the surface. A group of gentle whale sharks and playful dolphins joined us to say hello!

Meeting the Whale Sharks and Dolphins

We were diving under a “ bagan”. A Bagan is a traditional wooden fishing platform used by local fishermen, with nets underneath to catch very small fishes attracting them with lights at night. Since the early 20th century, locals have used these platforms as a sustainable, eco-friendly way to catch fish without destroying the environment.

Jumping into the ocean feels like discovering a hidden world of colour among the coral reefs, anthias, and sea slugs, but seeing these majestic whale sharks was a feeling beyond compare. We felt deeply honoured to share the water with these gentle giants. The healthy waters of Kaimana are clearly a wonderful habitat for them.

While we watched them, a pod of dolphins began playing all around us, acting as if they wanted us to join in their games! It was a perfect, sunny day with amazing underwater visibility.

At one point, we had 5 whale sharks gliding around us at once, with about 20 to 30 dolphins happily swimming by to scoop up the small fish the whale sharks missed!

In a world that often feels too busy or loud, diving in the untouched waters of Raja Ampat feels like finding a peaceful sanctuary where everyday noise simply disappears. Witnessing these magnificent creatures thrive so freely fills our hearts with joy and reminds us of the pure magic our oceans still hold.
