Seeking Black Manta in Raja Ampat | Wallacea Dive Cruise

Nature has a breathtaking way of showing off her greatness, and Raja Ampat is the silent witness to it all. This archipelago is renowned for its rich marine biodiversity with more than 75% coral species living beneath its ocean, attract pelagic to come closer.

On our recent voyage aboard Ambai, we headed to the remote south with one specific goal: finding the legendary Black Manta, one of the most popular pelagic among divers.

Exploring the Remote Reefs of South Misool

Our mission took us toward Misool and Waaf Island to explore dive sites that rarely see visitors. We were intentionally seeking out Pele’s Playground, a popular cleaning station for mantas because it's warm, has plenty of food like zooplankton and small shrimp, and school of wrasses that are ready to clean the bodies of these gentle giants.

We knew we were in the middle of the migration period, the specific time of year when these giants visit these shallow reefs to have parasites removed from their bodies.

Even with the right timing, the ocean offers no guarantees. You must be patient and stay lucky. So, we simply prepped our gear and jumped into the ocean.

A Lucky Encounter at the Cleaning Station

Divers Spotted Black Manta in Raja Ampat

The dive began along a deep ridge, moving through thick schools of jacks and shimmering silversides. Our eyes were constantly scanning the blue, hoping the migration would bring us a lucky encounter.

As we began our ascent toward the plateau, our patience paid off. A school of magnificent Black Manta glided into view. They stayed for over 40 minutes, hovering gracefully at the station.

It was incredible to witness the symbiotic relationship in action, and she remained still while wrasses and blacktail snappers busily worked to help with the removal of parasites from their dark wings.

Unforgettable Memories Beneath the Waves

To find exactly what we were looking for in such a remote corner of the world was a humbling experience. Witnessing this migration first-hand was more than just a successful dive, it was a memory that will last forever.
