Komodo Diving: Wild and Magnificent Pelagic Life

When diving the route from Komodo to Bali, divers are treated to a transition zone that blends the nutrient-rich currents of the Indian Ocean with the warm, tropical waters of the Flores Sea. For Andrian, the undisputed biggest highlight of the entire trip was the time spent within the borders of Komodo National Park.

He was completely blown away by the epic, rugged topography of the islands above the surface and the sheer abundance of pelagic life patrolling the reefs below.

“It was wild and magnificent,” he says, recalling the nutrient-rich currents that sweep through the park, bringing with them massive schools of fish and pelagic.

Komodo is famous among veteran divers for its high-voltage drift dives, where you simply let the ocean's momentum carry you past miles of untouched coral gardens.

He vividly remembers a specific morning dive at Tatawa Kecil, a small rocky islet famous for its vibrant topography and energetic currents. As they descended, the magic of the ocean unfolded perfectly. Four massive manta rays suddenly appeared from the blue, gliding gracefully right over him and his dive buddy, Cece.

“The beautiful, healthy coral below us was amazing on its own, but having the mantas fly overhead made it a truly priceless moment on this trip,” he explains.

For seasoned divers, swimming alongside manta rays in Komodo is always a thrilling experience, but seeing four of them interacting in their natural cleaning station is unforgettable.

Andrian notes that capturing these pristine moments on camera is often a matter of patience, luck, and excellent local knowledge. It was actively releasing steady streams of geothermal gas bubbles from the black sand, yet it was completely surrounded by incredibly beautiful, thriving corals,” he notes.

He explains that typically, you do not expect to see delicate, thriving coral reef ecosystems so close to harsh volcanic activity and sulfur vents. However, the nutrient-dense volcanic ash actually feeds the marine environment here.

This rare combination of a sloping underwater volcano, rising champagne-like bubbles, and vibrant, colorful soft corals made the dive site truly unique.

“The crew told me so many fascinating stories about their lives on the sea and the history of the boat. Our daily interactions weren't just the standard, stiff guest-and-crew dynamic; we truly became friends over the course of the voyage. They were super fun, highly professional underwater, and made the whole trip memorable,” he marks.

The Exceptional Culinary Experience at Sea

Diving up to three or four times a day burns a massive calorie, making the culinary experience a crucial part of any liveaboard trip. Andrian had exceptionally high praise for the diverse, restaurant-quality meals served onboard by the chef.

He vividly remembers a perfectly cooked, tender fish steak paired with seasoned potato wedges and crisp, fresh vegetables, a hearty, satisfying meal after a long afternoon dive.

However, it was the sweet treats that completely stole the show. Andrian admits that the onboard desserts were so phenomenal that he would jump at the chance to eat them all over again tomorrow if he could go for Sumbawa or Komodo diving again.

The Daily Rhythm: A Stress-Free Dive Vacation

Andrian also describe his whole trip feels like there is a distinct, peaceful rhythm to waking up with the sunrise, having a light breakfast, plunging into the ocean, and returning to a warm towel and a hot meal.

"For me, absolutely everything on the trip went perfectly. Nothing missed the mark, nothing was delayed, and nothing left me disappointed,” Andrian recalls his experience during the Komodo to Bali trip on Seahorse.

He also adds that everything was entirely stress-free and purely fun, from the intense Komodo diving and the seamless onboard activities to the quiet downtime spent watching the sunset over the Flores Sea.
